“Hit & Run” is a game of cat and mouse, with the player taking on the role of an unnamed protagonist who must find their way out of a building full of enemies.
Hit & Run is a movie that takes place during the time of the Vietnam War. It follows an American soldier, played by Tom Hardy, who is caught in a hit and run accident. The movie has intense moments of action and suspense throughout.
In the jail yard, inmates are wandering around. A prisoner with a bird tattoo on his hand is waiting in his cell. He is directed to the compound by a guard.
The essence of the story is that the prisoner is challenged by another inmate in the complex and beaten to death. Segev Azulay (Lior Raz) had been in Tel Aviv three weeks previously, seeing his wife, Danielle Wexler (Kaelen Ohm), dance with Israel’s renowned Batsheva Dance Company. Segev and Dani have been married for nearly a year and run their own tour business. Segev’s daughter, Ella (Neta Orbach), is completely over heals in love with her stepmother. In Segev’s life, everything seems to be going well.
Dani will be returning to the United States to audition for a New York-based dance group. Segev does not want her to go since if she wins the job, he and Ella would most likely remain in Tel Aviv. Before departing for the airport, Dani gets a text message urging her not to disregard whomever sent it. She tells the driver, family friend Moshe (Yoram Tollendano), to wait while she goes to visit her friend Syd (Siena Kelly), and to leave a message for “him.”
She then goes to a café to buy herself and Moshe some coffee. She gets struck by a vehicle on her way out, which comes to a halt momentarily before speeding away.
Segev goes to the hospital when he gets the call, but Dani has already gone. He must contact Dani’s father, Martin (Gregg Henry), to deliver the terrible news, but the most difficult task he faces is informing Ella. But first, another family friend, Moran Rosenblatt’s Tali Shapira, pays a visit to the hospital. She’s a detective, and Segev has asked her to investigate since the police haven’t discovered anything yet. She learns that the vehicle belongs to a local gang boss, whom she follows through Tel Aviv’s streets while she investigates.
Segev returns to Ella to inform her about Dani, and he recalls how they met: she joined him on a tour, and they got along so well that she accompanied him to pick up Ella.
He finds text messages and missed phone calls from the same number when he recovers Dani’s phone. When he picks up one of the calls, he’s taken aback to hear a guy address her lovingly. Assaf (Lior Ashkenazy) is a married Mossad director who finds out about Dani’s death through a news story. We learn that Dani and Assaf were together when Dani met Segev in another flashback.
What programs do you think it’ll remind you of? The Innocent, one of Netflix’s numerous Harlan Coben adaptations, has a similar vibe to Hit & Run. This is not, however, a script by Coben, but rather an interesting cooperation between Israeli and American authors, performers, and producers.
Hit & Run was developed by executive producers Raz and Avi Issacharoff (both of whom created Fauda). Despite this, American producers Dawn Prestwich and Nicole Yorkin are in charge of the program. The production takes place in Tel Aviv and New York, and it stars well-known American actors including Henry and Sanaa Lathan, who portray Segev’s ex-girlfriend and help him find Dani’s murderers. It’s an interesting mix that results in a thriller that seems a little different than most recent programs in this category.
With zoom-ins and camera pans, Mike Barker, who directed the first episode, gives the program an Israeli flavor as the tension builds. And he makes a point of showing Segev’s tattoos on a regular basis, creating the impression that he has a strange background for someone who works as a tour guide in Israel. It’s why, when Shapira starts investigating the accident, he finds an intruder in his house and breaks the man’s neck in the following fight, it’s both startling and unsurprising. That sort of training isn’t part of a tour guide’s toolkit.
It’s an action-packed program, complete with car chases and fights, but it’s also cerebral and methodical. It takes time to look at Segev and Dani’s connection, not only the emotional basis of it, but also what else was going on in Segev’s life, such as her relationship with Assaf.
Raz gives a rebellious and disturbing performance, and he is well backed by experienced Israeli performers like Rosenblatt and Ashkenazi. He does, however, get along with American and Canadian performers like Henry and Ohm. It helps that movie is based on his concept and explores his time in the Israeli Defense Forces, but Raz manages to convey more than action-star passion in the most tragic moments.
In the first episode, so many interesting possibilities are put up: Was Dani an undercover spy who by chance fell in love with her handler? What is the current status of Segev? And why is he following the trail of evidence that leads to Dani’s death in New York? It is rare to have a debut episode that creates so many interesting issues, so it opts to watch a simpler one.
Hit & Run has a stellar multinational cast, an interesting concept, and a narrative that explores a wide range of tale possibilities without becoming confused to the viewer.
